How Old is the Earth: 6,000 Years, or 4 Billion? Rabbis Offer Biblical “Proof”

“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever Thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God.” Psalms 90:2 (The Israel Bible™)

After successfully debating Bill Nye, a celebrity scientist, Ken Ham built a $92 million theme park in Kentucky with a full-size replica of Noah’s Ark as a centerpiece to promote his belief in Biblical Creationism. People are flocking to the park, and its Biblical message of creation seems to be gaining popularity. This belief has not caught on in Judaism, but the reasons may surprise you.

Pew poll in February showed that 34 percent of Americans choose creationism over evolution, and another 25 percent believe in evolution guided by a supreme being (intelligent design). The poll went into detail, showing that 57 percent of Evangelical Christians believe in creationism, with another 25 percent believing in natural processes guided by a supreme being, leaving only 11 percent who believe in evolution.

On the other hand, the Pew poll showed that 58 percent of Jews believed the world came about through natural processes, another 18 percent believed these processes were guided by a supreme being, and only 16 percent believed the world has always existed in its present form.

It may seem paradoxical that the People of the Book, who received the Torah directly from God,would reject a belief based on a literal reading of the Bible. But although many see creationism as a choice of belief and Bible over science and data, Jews have worked hard to live successfully in both worlds.

In its purest form, creationism understands the world as coming into existence, fully formed, in six calendar days of 24 hours each, with man created separately as the pinnacle of God’s work. It precludes evolutionary theory and theories about the origin of the universe, leading to a conflict on estimates of when the earth and the universe were created.

Scientists generally agree the earth was formed 4.5 billion years ago. Most scientists claim the Big Bang that brought the universe into existence occurred approximately 14 billion years ago. Young Earth creationists believe both events occurred simultaneously between 6,000 and 10,000 years ago.

As director of the Biblical Museum of Natural History, Rabbi Natan Slifkin embodies the ideal of a Biblical scientist. He doesn’t see any contradictions between the worlds of Bible and science. Judaism, he explains, has always been able to accommodate science and theology. He quoted the Rambam, a preeminent medieval Sephardic Jewish philosopher.

“As Rambam said, accept the truth from wherever it comes,” he told Breaking Israel News.According to the rationalist approach, it is preferable to explain creation in scientific terms, because it is always preferable to see God working within nature and a system of law. “

Conflicts do arise between Torah and science. The Hebrew calendar, presently standing at 5776, is, in theory, based on the creation of the world. Rabbi Slifkin again quoted the Rambam’s Guide to the Perplexed, in which the rabbinical scholar wrote, “The account of creation is not all to be taken literally.”

The Rambam went on to explain that the Six Days represent a conceptual rather than historical account of creation. Rabbi Slifkin cited Rabbi Dovid Tzvi Hoffman (1843-1921), a member of Agudath Israel’s Council of Torah Sages, who suggested that the Six Days of Creation were lengthy eras rather than 24-hour periods.

Evolution, the impetus for Ken Ham’s massive Biblical theme park, simply does not seem to be such a big deal for Jewish Biblical scholars.

“God can work through meteorology, through medicine, through history, and throughdevelopmental biology. This is why it makes no difference if the neo-Darwinian explanation of the mechanism for evolution is true or not,” Rabbi Slifkin explained. “All these descriptions were interpreted literally by the Sages of old, and yet almost all recent Torah scholars interpret them non-literally.”

Torah Judaism also differs from Bible-based Christian creationism on the point of the nature of man. Creationism holds that man is distinct from animals, owing to the separate description of his being “formed”. It is partly for this reason that creationists reject evolutionary theory.

Then Hashem God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Genesis 2:7

Genesis describes man’s creation twice, and Rabbi Slifkin emphasized the version in the first chapter of Genesis.

And God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them. Genesis 1:27

“Classical Judaism has long maintained that man is not qualitatively different from animals in hisphysical aspects,” the rabbi noted. “Man’s unique identity is in his spiritual soul, not in his physical body and most certainly not in his physical origin.”

Natan Aviezer. (Bar Ilan University)Natan Aviezer. (Bar Ilan University)

Professor Natan Aviezer of Bar Ilan University, a physicist and religious Jew, deals with this issue in his book Modern Science and Ancient Faith. He quotes Charles Darwin’s parting words in his manifesto on evolution, On the Origin of Species.

“There is a grandeur in this view of life, having been originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one, and from so simple a beginning, endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been and are being evolved.” Charles Darwin

Aviezer also cites Samson Raphael Hirsch, an influential German rabbi and contemporary of Darwin, bringing a Rabbinic concept of Olam Ke’Minhago Noheg (the universe goes its accustomed way). God did not simply create the world and step back. Aviezer explains that God works within nature.

“This important principle explains how God interacts with His world,” wrote Professor Aviezer in his book. “It follows from this principle that no scientific discovery can cast doubt on the existence of God.”

Sorry, i do not buy this. Many rock solid evidences points the human race being quite a lot older. The Vatican is not a good reference for this. More then 1500 changes were brought to the bible since it was written.

I really don't like being too critical of religious dogma and thought, but i really think the 6K to 10K creation of the Earth is ridiculous. Science is not always right, but religions are way too often wrong, just look at what they did to Galileo, and the Inquisition, and the 'Hoy Wars" and Hitler.

Bible aficionados and fanatics should leave room for human error in biblical interpretation and rank literalism. Please use discernment with all religious arguments. No religion has the whole truth about creation or our Creator. Keeping an open mind is the best strategy in a world of such obviously limited knowledge; and our ability to discern the whole truth is circumscribed by our ignorance.  JMO.

Have any of you really really really read your 1611/1769 King James Bible translations? All other so called bible are just transliterations of the King James Holy Bible. For example the so called New King James Version of the Bible is a lie. Until you acknowledge that there was a devil/Lucifer and that he has corrupted ALL OF THE NEW TRANSLATIONS OF THE BIBLE, and once you study to understand that there really is a Jesus that is God manifested in the flesh, then the earth could be a 100 billion years old, (2 Peter 3:1-(5)-(9) 1 day with God is as aTHOUSAND YEARS) this earth was made without form and was void because God cast it through the heavens. Psalms 50:1-6 teaches about the heavens that the earth was cast through, and ended up as being the 3rd rock from the sun. My God that created all things, knew where to position the earth in order for this 3rd rock from the sun, would be able to sustain life.

So what would that matter when you die, and discover that there really, really, really is a HELL. You are distracted by if there was really a Noah's Ark. Read Genesis chapters 6-9, and you will find enough evidence, but if you are spiritually blinded, you will NEVER accept these historical facts (1 Corinthians 2:9-(14)-16). The book of Job chronologically is before the book of Genesis, or the 5 books of Moses. If you want to know how old the world is, then read in the book of Job chapter 38. Also in books of Dueteronomy 10:14; Psalms 115:16 and Isaiah chapter 14:12-21, and Ezekiel chapter 28:11-19 teaches that the the Garden of Eden, was once Lucifers, before it was recreated, Genesis 1:1 (without form and was void, because it passed through the waters of the heavens), before the earth was given to Adam. The earth has been destroyed twice by water, but the 3rd time it will be destroyed by fire, because fire cleanses all things of bacterias and diseases (2 Peter 4:(10)-(12)-18); Revelations chapter 20:9-15. I am not a doomsday prophetical type of person, but I do believe what is written in the Lambs book of life, or the King James Version of the Bible.

Since Adam was made, or created from the earth, Adam is father of all living human beings, and Eve is the mother, and when we die, we go back where we came from, and this is why we eat what is grown in the dirt, and it gives us all the vitamins, and minerals or nutrients that we need to survive. Read Genesis chapters 3 and 4.

Genesis 1:1, did any of you ever wondered why the earth was without form and was void? The earth was not always in this solar system, because at one time the earth was at the top of the Universe where God's Throne is, but when Lucifer rebelled against God, the earth was cast out of its position, and Lucifer and the angels that followed Lucifer, was cast out with the earth. (Because the earth was corrupted by rebellion)

Revelations 12:1-6,-7-(9)-12 $atan and his rebellious angels (minions) are cast down to the earth, from heaven. Daniel 12:1-4,-5-13.

Unless you do your own personal research, you will never understand that this earth is older than 6,000 to 10,000 years old, (carbon dating is NOT accurate 1 Timothy 6:20 science is falsely so called) this earth that we live on was just recreated about a little over 6,000 years ago, this as far back as biblical chronology takes us. In Genesis chapter 2, God created the earth in 6 days, and on the 7th day God rested, (not that He was tired), but to give us a president of why we work 6 days, and should take 1 day to rest, but also for us to give thanks to God, and worship Him for all that He has done for us.

St. John 1:1-3, 14; 1 Timothy 3:16; Hebrews 1:1-4 we should NEVER limit the power of God/Jesus, nor the bible, because this is our recoredings of God's historical accounts of His creation, on this 3rd rock from the sun.

Have a blessed day, and a spiritually prosperous future in Christ Jesus as our Lord and personal Savior.

Respectfully,

Grateful2Jesus

GM Neth, praise our Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit of God teaches us all that we need to know, and understand about creation, and about recreation, we all just need to read The Word of God, but not just read it, but also have the confidence to live, and share it based on facts and common sense.

St. John 14:26; 2 Timothy 3:16 the Holy Spirit of God will only real the whole truth to those who have been born again spiritually, and who has a humble heart that sincerely wants to learn the Word of God, but to those who use the Word of God with wrong motives.

Act 8:9-(18-21)-25 these scriptures deals with someone with wrong motives.

Stay thirsty my friend for the truth of the Word of God, and don't let Satan deceive you with his lies. St. John 8:44-45.

Science/evolution is man-kind trying to take the place of God in creation, Lucifer tried to take the place of God/Jesus (Jesus is also called the second Adam, 1 Corinthians 15:22, 45), and look at what happened to him.

So, keep Jesus #1 in your life, by studying the Holy Word of God daily, and don't put confidence in man-kind, because we are only human beings, and we make mistakes.

Psalms 118:8; Proverbs 25:19.

Have a blessed day, and a spiritually prosperous future in Christ Jesus as our Lord and personal Savior.

Respectfully,

Grateful2Jesus
